About
The business was established in 1973 and founded by Dayton Painter. Dayton passed away in 2021, and members of his family now run the business. He initially started as a freelancer, specializing in Volkswagen engine work like lifter repair and cylinder head reconditioning, out of a small shop behind his friend's shop. In 1984, he moved to a larger shop on Custer Street, which saw a significant business boom. The shop has since expanded to offer a full range of services, including repair, engine rebuilding, and machine work, all specifically for air-cooled Volkswagen engines.

Growing up surrounded by Volkswagen classics—my dad owned a '69 Beetle, a '76 Westfalia camper van, and an '82 Westy. I've been passionate about VWs since childhood. I've been working in the VW industry since 1996 and currently own a beautifully restored '60 ragtop Beetle.
With expertise as both a mechanic and machinist, I bring deep hands-on knowledge to every project at Painter's Grinding. If you have any questions or need expert service, feel free to reach out: pgshop@paintersgrinding.com
